I should have just said Okay and dropped
it right then and there, Megan thought to herself now,
in retrospect. But I had to go and open my big mouth.
Actually, what she had said was, Donny,
please get rid of this stuff and don't let Tommy use
your truck anymore. You know that if the police find
this stuff anywhere near you, they are going to violate
you. The conditions of your probation from the last
time they came out order you to abstain from the use
of any alcohol or drugs.
And that was all it took. Donny exploded
at her, ordered her to leave his brother out of this
and quit telling him how to run his life. Megan turned
to leave the room; she and the kids were going to be
late. But Donny lunged for her, grabbed her by the left
arm and jerked her back toward him. When she resisted,
he threw her to the ground, got on top of her, grabbed
her neck with both hands, and began to choke her. He
was yelling obscenities and telling her he was sick
and tired of her self-righteous attitudes.
Their oldest child, Christina, age 9,
came running in. When she saw what was going on, she
ran to the phone and called 911. The operator had just
come on the line when Donny slapped the little girl
and knocked her to the floor. Megan jumped up to defend
Christina, and when Donny resumed choking her, Christina
grabbed Charlie, age 5, and shot out the front door
and across the street to the neighbors. Fortunately,
the neighbors had already heard the commotion and called
911 themselves. The police were there in less than two
minutes. They pulled Donny off of Megan, put him in
cuffs, and hauled him off to jail.
Now Megan was sitting in a dumpy little
waiting room, trying to fill out a police report that
would certainly send her husband to jail, at least for
a while. She was really tired and really sad. Most of
all, she felt like a huge failure. She had tried so
hard. And still it had come to this. At that moment,
she flashed back to that point in the fight where Donny
had slapped Chrissy to the floor, and Megan clearly
saw the terror in Chrissy's eyes. She would never forgive
herself if anything ever happened to the kids. Suddenly
she knew what she had to do. Slowly, more like a robot
than a person, she starting filling out the report.
And as she worked her way through the paperwork, she
paused just briefly to ask the social worker how she
could get in touch with a good divorce lawyer.
Is this a true story? Probably, even though
it is not based on any actual single case file. It is
true because this kind of tragedy happens somewhere
close to you, maybe right in your town, maybe right
on your street, countless times every day. Maybe it
has happened - is happening right in your own home.
If that is the case, then please pay very close attention
to what we are about to share with you.
The Biggest National Epidemic You Never
Heard Of
In the winter of 2003, the entire world
was in an uproar over the outbreak of a new disease
called SARS. It originated in China and gradually spread
around the world, throwing public health officials into
a state of absolute panic. SARS viciously attacks the
respiratory system and is often fatal, especially in
older patients or people with weakened immune systems.
All during the spring of 2003, the world rallied together
to halt the spread of this dreadful disease. It was
on the national news every night. Twenty-four hour news
channels interviewed expert after expert in their attempt
to inform the public and help them protect themselves.
The epidemic seemed to ease toward the
