Chapter 6

ABCs for Your Own Recovery

Sarah knew it was coming. She just didn't know when. She had been married to Keith for ten years now, and she could read his rage cycle like an airline schedule. It had been eight days since his last really big blow-up. Over the past two years it was rare for him to ever go longer than ten days without some sort of very unpleasant incident. So Sarah was certain that sometime within the next 48 hours, or at the most, 72 hours, he was going to rage again.

The problem was that this was Thursday. That meant Keith would be primed for an attack sometime over the weekend, and her sister and family were planning to be here this weekend. They were all supposed to go to the lake, go water skiing, take the kids to the movies, have a big barbeque, and generally just chill out and have a nice time. That would all be spoiled if Keith kept to his regular cycle. Sarah shuddered at the thought of her husband going into a rage, accusing her and her sister of being something that rhymes with witches, throwing the drink cooler and the seat cushions overboard, and swamping the neighbor kids jet ski with the wake from the boat right before he rammed into the dock.

There was only one solution; she would have to trigger him early. She had done it before.
Actually, she had done it several times. It was never a nice experience, and it could sometimes be a little risky, but it was usually worth the pain and suffering in order to buy a little safety for something more important, Jacob's birthday or Thanksgiving, for instance. Keith was always so nice for about 48 hours after he had a rage attack. He was sweet and he would buy her stuff and agree to pretty much anything she said. Yes, she knew what she had to do.

About that time, she heard Keith pull into the driveway. She decided it had better be tonight, after Jake went to bed. She already knew how to set it up. The bill from Neiman-Marcus came today, the one for the three new outfits and three pairs of shoes that she bought after the big
