Anger Busting Workbook

Joe: Well, my boss told me to do a bunch of stupid stuff, and I didn't say anything but, Yes, sir!

Therapist: You got it. Perfect example of a WIN.

Continue around the room until everyone has participated and you have collected lots of examples of these behaviors. Then move on to introducing the workbook. Obviously, everyone will need his own copy.

WORKING THROUGH THE WORKBOOK

The Workbook gives you plenty of options and opportunities to keep the group busy for the prescribed number of sessions. They will be responsible for the material up through Chapter 3, including the Preface and the Introduction. The reading and the worksheets make excellent homework assignments, which they can bring back for discussion and evaluation by the group every week. And the Slips, Wins and Miracles routine works great as a warm-up to open each session.
Here are a few tips for keeping things moving:

  • Don't hesitate to interrupt if someone is getting off track or missing the point.
  • Simply say, Wait a minute, make your point and keep moving.
  • Anytime someone reports a slip, ask him to rewind the videotape, reset the scene, and ask, What could you have done instead?
  • If you want a guy to expand on something say, Tell me more about that.
  • If a guy had a win or a miracle, give him a boost by saying, How did you do
    that?
  • When someone reports a slip, always ask, What could you do to make up for
    that?
  • Always encourage group feedback when a guy is talking through a slip or a
    make up issue.
