When Your Anger Goes Beyond A Temper Tantrum

When Your Anger Goes Beyond A Temper Tantrum

As a young teenager I used to know someone for whom the smallest frustrations would throw him into a rage and out of control violence. In those days, there was no online anger management. He terrified his wife and children. It was truly scary to watch. Today, mental health therapists call this condition Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED) or Explosive Anger Disorder (EAD). The term has little meaning as a diagnosis, but it is used mostly as a designation for insurance companies.

Without getting overly scientific, this disorder is characterized by random acts of aggression, violence, and destructive behavior. People who have an IED are thrown into a rage out of proportion to the stimulus that triggered the event. People like this need the help of a mental health professional and online anger management.

People with an anger disorder goes beyond someone being just short-tempered. Those afflicted are unstable and are unable to prevent explosive outbreaks. If they have a short temper they can bring their anger under control by force of will and online anger management. People with IED are unable to do this.

For a while I drove a tractor-trailer across the country. Initially, I was with a driver trainer who had explosive outbreaks, especially when speaking with his wife from whom he was separated. While talking on the phone with her on one occasion he screamed something unintelligible into the wall phone and started slamming the receiver against the wall until the receiver broke in two. This far exceeds the needs available from online anger management. A mental health professional needs to check the person to make sure if they have an anger disorder or if there is something else causing the problem.

An anger disorder is characterized from other types of mood disorders involving anger by three key indicators. The first of these is whether there is some serious property damage from the anger, or serious injury caused by one or more explosive occurrences. The second indicator is reactions that are out of proportion to the stimulus, while the third is that the behavior cannot be explained away as a result of some kind of mood altering drug or an existing mood disorder such as bipolar or depression. Again, these are beyond the assistance available from online anger management.

Furthermore, after the anger explosion is over with the person may feel extremely tired and confused. This may be compounded by distress and guilt at what they did. As a final observation, mood disorders and antisocial personality disorders are often tied into having an IED, which signals needs exceeding what online anger management can provide.
