The Myths Around Anger Management

The Myths Around Anger Management

Even before you start to try to manage your own anger, you really need to be away of what anger is. There are myths about what anger is. Right from the start I want to dispel some of the myths that go around regarding anger, and anger management techniques.

Men get angrier than females
It is a simple untruth that men are angrier than women. There have been studies that show that women get angry just as often as men-this is about twice a week on average. Overall: Men report more intense anger; we find that women keep their anger longer. So, both men and women would benefit by practicing anger management techniques.

It is bad to be angry
There can be positive reasons for being angry. It helps you to cope with stress. It makes you more energetic, helps you communicate better with other people, gives you more confidence, and defends you from insecurity. There are some famous people such as Gandhi, and Martin Luther King who were known to be angry men--but they used that anger and which they turned into non-violent social reform to help make the world a better place. One of their primary anger management techniques was passive resistance to unjust laws.

It is good to be angry
Anger is not good when it resorts to such things as domestic violence, self-mutilation and drug addiction. When these elements are involved, the sooner anger management techniques are applied, the better.

Anger becomes a problem only when you openly express it
The percentage of people who enact their feelings when they get angry is as little as 10%. 90% of people suppress their anger by saying things like "I don't want to talk about it" or "I'm not angry at all really". People express their anger to try and get attention. The people who need anger management techniques are the people who repress and suppress the angry feelings.

Older people are more irritable
In actual fact it is the opposite-as you get older you have fewer negative emotions and find that you have greater emotional control of yourself. They have less need for anger management techniques. People are actually like a good wine or a good cheese-they definitely improve with age.

Anger is all in the mind
There is nothing more false that this statement. Emotions are primarily a physical state. If it were all a state of mind then why would anyone say "I feel I have a fist in my chest when I get angry". It is an absolute fact that when you are angry that emotion manifests itself in your muscles within your entire body. The hairs on the back of the neck rise, your blood pressure increases, your heart rate increases and your blood sugar levels increase. Even the temperature of your fingers increases. Each of these examples indicate that anger management techniques are necessary.

Getting angry is about getting even
It has been proven that the most common motive behind anger has been a desire to show authority, or to improve your image, but not necessarily to cause harm. Another emotive force is letting off steam to relieve your frustrations, but with no intent to harm anyone else. Even so, positive anger management techniques are valuable in these situations.

It is always certain types of people that have an anger problem
It has been shown over the years that people requiring help with anger management have included-truck drivers, college tutors, doctors, grandparents, policeman, millionaires, and even children. Anger is inherent in people of all colors, nationalities and religions. Anger is universal. It would be good, then, if knowledge of anger management techniques were universal as well.
Anger only stems from human conflict

Sometimes this is the case sometimes it is not. Experts have shown that anger is an emotion that can be started when exposed to foul smells, aches or pains, even hot temperatures. You can clearly see that none of these can be blamed on the actions of other humans. Regardless of the source of anger in humans, the need for anger management techniques is just as strong as it would be in the case of human conflict.
A good friend of mine and client who struggled with his anger for many years said to me since I have controlled my anger I feel at peace. I no longer go to bed thinking what can I do to get even. This I feel is a great testimony to anger management.
